Not just Images – Applying Inclusive Design

As designers, we understand the importance of inclusive content. But how dowe apply inclusive design holistically? It requires empathy, understanding, andintentional inclusion of diverse aspects of humanity to break stereotypes,represent underrepresented groups, and redefine norms. While we have theguidance of the technical functionality of software or imagery, but beyondimages, we must consider inclusivity in quizzes, scenarios, video scripts,text, and more.

Looking throughdifferent course elements (quizzes, scenarios, images, scripts), we willconsider ways to increase inclusion, represent underrepresented people in allindustries, roles, skills, and interests, and expand and redefine norms. Wrapit up by considering some missteps experienced in the initial rollout andapplication. You’ll leave this session with new inclusive design considerationsto apply back to your content, regardless of audience and modality.

  • Go beyond technical end-user experience andconsider the emotional and social impact we create
  • Identify elements of content to apply inclusivedesign practices, including scenarios, quizzes, and written examples.
  • Considerations to increasing inclusion forvisuals (icons and images) and expressions (word choice and language)
  • Avoid common missteps to increase intentional inclusion.
