Patrick Gardner: PhD, Mathematics, Kansas State University. Pat is the principal engineer responsible for one of the Department of Energy’s Hanford Site primary courseware management systems. Pat has extensive experience in computer based training and was the developer for the courseware management system which deploys and tracks the computer based training curriculum for the Mission Support Alliance (LLC). Pat was the architect of the General Employee Training Platform that trains about twenty thousand employees a year. Among his accomplishments, Pat is the master of several computer languages including Java Script, Cold Fusion, and Flash’s AS3. Pat is an adjunct professor and currently teaches mathematics and statistics at Columbia Basin Community College in Pasco, WA.

Course navigation, and how to best manage the limited resources of working memory and the computer screen, are key considerations in eLearning design. The effect of course maps on learning is difficult to assess, as the research findings are mixed. This study examined whether a course map affected the length of time to complete a training course and the achievement results of 846 adult learners.
