On November 16, 2016 at DevLearn 2016 Conference & Expo,RISC, Inc., a premier provider of learning management systems, and iSpringSolutions, Inc., the leading eLearning authoring tools vendor, announced thefirst commercially available combination of an authoring tool and learningmanagement system (LMS) compatible with the cutting-edge cmi5 eLearningstandard.
Content produced by iSpring Suite authoring software is nowfully compatible with RISC’s VirtualTraining Assistant LMS, giving full interoperability between twoproducts over the cmi5 protocol.
cmi5 is the latest eLearning standard that addresses theshortcomings of the good old SCORM standard: SCORM does not allow delivery ofboth online and offline learning on mobile devices (true on-the-go learning), while cmi5 can track learners’activity outside an LMS, even offline. The new protocol works on top of xAPI (ExperienceAPI) and allows LMSs to report detailed data on learners’ activities. cmi5helps close security concerns in SCORM, supports distributed content, andeliminates pop-up windows that are incompatible with mobile delivery. cmi5 hit a major milestone in June 2016 whenthe ADL released the first production-ready version of the cmi5 specification.
“iSpring is always on the forefront of the eLearningtechnologies. We were one of the first adopters of the Experience API. Now weare one of first adopters of cmi5,” says Yury Uskov, the CEO of iSpringSolutions. “We believe that our cooperation with RISC will make the cmi5standard more popular among other vendors.”
“At RISC, we are proud to be the first commercially availablecmi5 LMS,” states Duncan Welder, director of client services for RISC. “Now,with iSpring’s proven cmi5 interoperability, we are truly excited to see thenext generation of web-based training beginning to take shape, driven by aforward-thinking organization.”
Support of cmi5 is available from version 8.5 of iSpringSuite, a PowerPoint-based eLearning authoring tool. RISC’s Virtual Training Assistant™ LMSsupports cmi5 starting with version 8.0. Both updates are now available.
RISC and iSpring pioneered the support of cmi5 in LMSs andauthoring tools, respectively. The two companies also joined forces to ensurecompatibility of the first cmi5 authoring tool and the first cmi5 LMS. Thisoffers business and academic customers an early possibility to benefit from thenewest standard in a production environment.
