We hear buzzwords like neuro-this and brain-based that. The brain is arguably the most complex thing in the known universe. And you want to change it in predictable ways? That’s not going to happen with magic pixie dust. You need to have a handle on what’s known! Not all of it (or you’d be a cognitive scientist instead), but what’s useful. You need to know the models—the structures and processes—that underpin what works.

In this session we’ll cover the layers of cognitive science, from neural to social, that explain learning. We’ll talk about neurons firing, patterns activating, attending to senses, and the forms of processing that lead from consciousness to automaticity. We will focus on how our brains learn. This forms the foundations for the following sessions, and grounds what works and what’s myth. Come get the Cog Sci 101 you need to be an effective practitioner.
