810 Confidently Apply Instructional Design Techniques to VR Training

Your boss is considering virtual reality to level-up your learning program and asked you to lead the team. VR sounds like a good idea but you don't know how your instructional design methods are going to hold up in a modality you don't really know. Staying current on trends in emerging tech is different from leading the charge.
In this session, you'll learn how to adapt the instructional design techniques you already have and apply them to creating a VR training simulation. You'll explore questions to consider asking your subject matter experts during your needs analysis. Using their responses—from novice learners to experts—you can begin to use that information to help you design a comprehensive simulation for a variety of learners. Next, you'll assess your design against the limitations of the modality and your favorite adversary—time! Like other training programs, you'll need to prove to your stakeholders that your training works; after refining the design you'll discover how you can capture data in VR and decide what methods might function better outside of the headset. Finally, you'll use a checklist to keep the quality in your QA testing. You'll leave this session with a roadmap on how to approach Instructional Design for a virtual reality simulation that will immerse your learners and keep you confident of your abilities for the next tech trend.

Training Program Specialist
Monique St. Paul currently works as a training program specialist. She formerly worked as an instructional designer with ContinuumXR, focusing on applying learning theory and game design to training in virtual reality. She is the co-host of Intersections in Learning and Development, a webcast hosted by the Training, Learning, and Development (TLDC) community. Monique's leadership, facilitation, and public speaking experiences help her craft engaging curriculum for her learners. Monique holds a master's degree in communication management with a concentration in learning and development from the University of Denver. She received her bachelor's degree in communications from Roger Williams University. She serves as president for the ATD Southern Connecticut chapter.
