Measuring learning is mission-critical in at least three ways: It helps us respond to stakeholders, it helps us support our learners, and it helps us improve our learning designs. Unfortunately, when it comes to learning measurement, we as learning professionals are often so confused and prone to blind spots that we really mess up things! According to recent eLearning Guild research, only 17% of us were able to do the learning measurement we wanted to do, and over half of us thought we should be doing better. We need a new clarity. The traditional models of assessment (Kirkpatrick-Phillips) are incomplete at best and perilously misguided at worst. We need to begin with a deep understanding of learning — workplace learning in particular — and build a measurement approach that enables us to create virtuous cycles of continuous improvement.
