Learning and development organizations around the world are being forced to change from the old isolated, disconnected, primarily instructor-led and classroom-based formal programs to a new, more technology-driven, mobile, social, and informal source of employee learning. The old rule of 70/20/10, in which formal learning represents 70%, blended learning 20%, and informal learning 10%, has flipped in only a few years because of new educational technology and the changing demographic of learners. Learning is becoming smarter and is soon going to shift from just-in-time to just-for-me. The new learning experience will be all about mobile, chunking, social, collaborative, deep linking, and informal as primary.
To enable the new learning experience, instructional designers and developers must recognize the role the learning management system (LMS) and the learning content management system (LCMS) plays in deploying content in these new ways. Because LMSs and LCMSs are how learners are most likely going to interact with content, it is critical that learning professionals understand how these systems behave and how best to design and develop for them. Participants in this session will learn exactly what LMSs and LCMSs do and don’t do, as well as the two systems’ similarities and differences. You’ll also look at new learning modalities, and technologies such as the Experience API (xAPI) that supports those modalities.

- The differences between an LMS and an LCMS
- The overlaps between an LMS and an LCMS
- The role of the new xAPI
