P03 BYOD: Visual Design for L&D
8:30 AM - 4:30 PM Monday, October 21
Antigua B
We’re constantly surrounded by visually engaging design that can grab and keep our attention. So how can we take the best aspects of this and apply it to our own learning design and content? While many in our field don’t have a formal background in visual design, building these skills doesn’t need to be intimidating. Stronger visual design can transform dry, dense, or confusing content into something more approachable. It can also improve retention and reduce cognitive load for learners, which makes for more effective solutions.
In this hands-on workshop you’ll discover practical strategies, processes, and resources that can help you use visual design to enhance your work. You’ll start by exploring how to see visual design as a process and how to apply it to learning content. You’ll then explore tactics that can make getting started with visual design easier, such as how to use existing inspiration to help you create your own unique design elements and templates. Finally, you’ll use the tools, tips, techniques, and processes discussed to craft your own personalized samples, mockups, and templates that you can apply to your projects right away.
In this session, you will learn:
- The processes behind using visual design for learning
- How to work with existing design standards in new ways
- How sources for design inspiration can make design work easier, and where to find them
- How to use real world examples to create your own design resources for later application
- How to break down existing designs into core elements that you can use in your own work
- How use a sandbox approach to build mockups and samples
- Strategies for how to apply design concepts that reflect how people typically consume content
