P06 Using Data to Drive Better Training Decisions
8:30 AM - 4:30 PM Monday, October 21
Montego DE
Going beyond completion records and showing the deeper impacts of training can be tricky, but it can always be done—and it can always be done even better. So where do you start? And when do you stop? Which metrics matter most? What if you don't have enough data? Or worse yet, too much? Which tools should you use? What if your analysis exposes something negative? And how can you talk about what the data tells you with the rest of the business in words they understand ... and maybe even appreciate?
In this workshop, you'll gain hands-on experience collecting and interpreting the data you need to make more effective and defensible decisions about your training content, learning technology, and performance impact. We'll focus on the real-world use cases you're facing right now and soothe your data pain points. By the end of the day, you'll have data strategies you can use to identify what you can cut from your training programs, decide how to improve your development workflow, and show performance results to your organization or clients.
In this session, you will learn:
- How to determine what data your organization really cares about
- How to quantify and express things like risk without making your head hurt
- How to measure data "intangibles" such as quality
- What is not worth measuring, and how to say so
- How to conduct usability testing that's fast, cheap, and useful
- How to interpret mountains of data without getting overwhelmed
- Which data optimizations tend to give you more bang for your buck
- Five things you can stop doing with data immediately

Designers, managers, senior leaders (directors, VP, CLO, executive, etc.)
