P14 BYOD: JavaScript Coding for eLearning Pros
8:30 AM - 4:30 PM Tuesday, October 22
Antigua A
Increasingly, audience expectations are forcing eLearning developers to move outside the comfort zone fostered by the current set of authoring tools used in the field. Demand for higher levels of customization, interaction, and engagement have pushed eLearning developers to max out the capabilities of authoring tools and turn to other methodologies of building learning content. The introduction and inclusion of A/R and V/R have also pushed the industry to mature beyond the capabilities of contemporary authoring tools of today. So how does an eLearning developer push his or her authoring capabilities forward? How can content be augmented to meet the growing demand of audiences in the digital media era? The solution to many of the shortcomings of today's mass-produced learning content is customization through code. And, that code is JavaScript.
In this hands-on workshop, you will learn the foundations of the JavaScript programming language. This language is used in the web browser, and also as the scripting language in many authoring tools like Captivate. The language empowers those who know it to include everything from AR and VR to simulation and interactive video in their content, with total control over the interactions with learners. You'll learn how to write basic JavaScript to do things like output content to the user, track and remember information, display multimedia, and obtain real-time information from web services. No prior experience coding is needed, and you'll be able to take advantage of JavaScript both inside and outside your traditional authoring environment after completing this program. You'll also take home several resources that will allow you to keep learning and future proof your career in eLearning development and design.
In this session, you will learn:
- How to create JavaScript
- How to store information using JavaScript
- How to output content to the user using JavaScript
- How to manage media using JavaScript
- How to process data using JavaScript
- How to make decisions (branch) when coding
- How to integrate JavaScript into your scripting environment
Audience:
Designers, developers
Technology discussed:
JavaScript, HTML5, Adobe Captivate
Participant technology requirements: (For BYOL sessions)
Any laptop with a free text editor (such as Notepad) and a web browser installed
