P04 BYOL: Designing and Developing Game Apps for Learning
8:30 AM - 4:30 PM Sunday, June 18
Marina 5
Identifying the right opportunity for a game solution is only part of the equation. When it’s the right fit, you then need to be sure it works! Designing, developing, and implementing a game solution can be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming.
In this workshop, you will gain the foundation you need to get started in designing and developing learning games for mobile and desktop delivery. You’ll look at how games have evolved and what you can learn from different traditional games, as well as how to determine which gaming elements will work best for your learning environment. You will learn how to define a project, use a checklist to determine whether gaming is a fit, and determine what level of gaming to utilize. Finally, you will learn how to prototype your concept and how to iterate to improve your game for your audience.
In this session, you will learn:
- How to plan the game architecture
- How to design the game—tools, tips, and creating the assets
- How to define and apply gaming elements
- How to prototype to test your game
- How to build a prototype with PowerPoint
- How to sketch and test your concept with MarvelApp.com
- How to create a video scenario with gaming mechanics using HTML5
- How to use GameSalad to create a game for delivery to a desktop or mobile environment
- About Unity and several authoring tools and platforms
