P12 Mastering the Art of Storyboarding for eLearning

8:30 AM - 4:30 PM Tuesday, March 15

Poinsettia/Quince

The art in storyboarding for eLearning is the visual design that shows the instructional flow of content. These storyboards are loose sketches or drawings to define behaviors, navigational structure, branching scenarios, or interaction behaviors. This preliminary process in the design phase aids designers when communicating with stakeholders on what the project will look like before development. Interestingly, the learning and development industry does not adopt this process as widely as it can.

Storyboarding is not a template. It’s a process that plays an important role in the initial design phase of an eLearning project. You will start the day by practicing a basic visual communication language. From there, you will develop a visual library that is internationally recognizable and easy to communicate. Next, you will introduce raw content and begin mapping out ideas on instructional flow, interactive behaviors, and overall user experience. Finally, you will refine your design and begin developing an instructional storyboard in preparation for development.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to sketch a visual library for storyboarding
  • How to visually map instructional flow and behaviors
  • Recognize considerations from designs you may not have seen otherwise
  • How to transform the art of their storyboard to a document review and development

Audience:
Novice and intermediate designers, developers, project managers, and managers. A basic understanding of instructional design principles assumed. No visual design skills required.

Technology discussed in this session:
Pencil and paper (or equivalent digital app), Microsoft Word, and Microsoft PowerPoint.
