P09 B.Y.O.L.: Using HTML5 for Mobile Development

8:30 AM - 4:30 PM Tuesday, June 9

501

Designing mobile learning for multiple devices, screen sizes, operating systems, and bandwidths can be a very laborious process—especially if you need to support more than one platform. Porting from iOS to Android and again to Windows 8 is time consuming and expensive. Content management systems (CMSs) aren’t always universally supported, and they may limit the types of learning interactions you create. mLearning developers need to be able to create mobile apps that almost everyone can consume, manage, deploy, and update. The challenge is to be able to do so without learning Objective C, Java, and other languages—and without hiring someone else.

In this workshop you will learn to create HTML5-based mobile applications that are salable in the Apple App store, the Google Play store, or other mobile marketplaces. If you know the basics of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, you’re ready to take on this exciting workshop. You’ll be encouraged to code, creating applications that demonstrate many of the features available in the PhoneGap (aka Cordova) library. You’ll build a standards-compliant eLearning app with HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS with the help of a little jQuery and the PhoneGap library. The app will be completely interactive, and at the end of the workshop you can deploy it to your Android- or iOS-compatible device.

In this session, you will learn:

  • Where it’s appropriate to use HTML5-based mobile-app development, and where it’s not
  • The architecture and workflow of HTML5 mobile apps
  • How to insert JavaScript libraries
  • How to use JavaScript libraries to handshake with device hardware
  • How to write JavaScript code to interface with device accelerometers
  • How to use the HTML5 canvas across diverse display environments
  • How to display sprite graphics on the canvas

Audience:
Intermediate and advanced designers and developers who have a working understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Technology discussed in this session:
HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, PhoneGap, Android, and iOS.

Student technology needs:
A PC or Mac with a text editor, a web browser, and PhoneGap (free installation).
