P01 B.Y.O.L.: From Designer to Developer: Building for an iOS Device

8:30 AM - 4:30 PM Tuesday, June 9

406

Developing a website is fairly easy compared to developing specific products that can be used on an iPhone or iPad. Getting content onto these devices requires a new set of technical skills, one that is important as more users default to iOS devices. While there are tremendous advantages to having content available locally on an iOS device, getting started with learning to build iOS content can be a challenging process.

In this hands-on session you will explore how to design and develop content with iOS devices in mind. You will start your day exploring how to develop a truly interactive publication using the free iBooks application from Apple. You will learn to build a complete tutorial that incorporates video, questions/quizzes, and other interactive objects. You will examine how to make a simple native application using Apple’s free Xcode application. You will also explore some coding additions that can add more options to your applications. You will leave this workshop with the skills to start building new products immediately.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to create an electronic publication using iBooks
  • How to incorporate video and audio inside an iBook document
  • How to incorporate other interactive elements such as a photo gallery, puzzles, and quizzes
  • To create a new native application that incorporates many simple interface designs
  • How to navigate between screens in a native application without writing code
  • To incorporate interactions in a native iOS app by writing simple blocks of code
  • The basics for developing for a wearable technology like Apple Watch

Audience:
Novice and intermediate designers, developers, and project managers.

Technology discussed in this session:
iOS, Mac, and Apple devices.

Student technology needs:
Mac laptop required for workshop. Xcode 6.1.1 or newer and the newest version of iBooks. Both Xcode and iBooks is free to download from Apple.com.
