P12 Using Experience Design to Develop Simulations

Improving performance is increasingly becoming a challenge of application rather than instruction. The challenges workers face are increasingly contextual in nature and require different responses depending on where the situation occurs and with whom. It’s best to learn this context via experience, but practicing in a live environment is both expensive and risky. What is needed is a way to create an “experience in a box” that enables our participants to exercise judgment in different contexts, to experience the consequences of their decisions, and to get feedback as to why what happened, happened. Of course the challenge with this is how to do this in a cost effective and scalable manner?

In this hands-on workshop participants will learn the distinction between experience and instruction and explore the methodology of experience design. You will play a simulation so that you can gain insight into the approach and better understand the tools/levers of experience design. You will develop your own simulation by applying the concepts of experience design to your own business or performance challenge. Participants will also review different tools that are available in the market to develop simulations without the need for programming.

In this session, you will learn:

  • To understand experience design as a tool for achieving the development goals of your organization
  • When to use simulations to support your overall learning objectives
  • How to effectively capture and deploy experience in a simulation format
  • How to create to the illusion of complexity in a decision tree so that it can be easily accomplished
  • How to make the simulation experience ‘sticky’ to support learner retention and application

Novice to advanced designers, developers, project managers, managers, and directors with knowledge of targeted learning objectives so that they have something to work on during the course of the workshop.

Ken Spero


Ed Leadership Sims

Ken Spero is the CEO of Ed Leadership Sims, which was established in partnership with the Graduate School of Education of the University of Pennsylvania. In his role, Ken continues his work in experience design to help clients shift the focus from "what" leaders think to "how" they think. Previously he worked at the Regis Company and designed and launched the Immersive Learning University for NexLearn, which continued the work he had begun with the co-founding of Humentum. He is also an adjunct faculty member at the University of Pennsylvani. Ken holds an MBA from Columbia University and an undergraduate degree in management science from Case Western Reserve University.
