Syllabus

The following topics are covered:

SESSION ONE: October 6

In this session, you will view eLearning videos of all sorts and qualities followed by a discussion of what makes good eLearning video and the practical aspects of making that video work for you. While watching the videos, you will participate in a discussion of what the video creation process involves as well as what the creative process is in video—where the inspiration comes from. You will also participate in a discussion of how to think about and create a video before you shoot the first frame. You will learn some basic production techniques, along with some basic editing principles. Your post-session assignment will be to create a very short video with at least three edits. There will also be two video tutorials to review on your own.

SESSION TWO: October 13

In this session, you will view the short videos created from the previous session’s assignment. You will work on the principles of shot selection, along with some shooting techniques, including camera and lighting placement to ensure you get the shot you want. You will also learn how to complete simple but effective audio and video editing, along with some special techniques and video editing do’s and don’ts. There will be video tutorials to review on your own, which cover the topics demonstrated in class. Your post-session assignment will have you applying some of the techniques you learned.

SESSION THREE: October 21

In this session you will view the short videos created from the previous session’s assignment. You will then learn about some advanced editing techniques, along with do’s and don’ts. The instructor will demonstrate how video is an iterative process and how iterations can tighten up and polish your video to make a memorable video that sticks with learners. There will be video tutorials to review on your own that cover the topics demonstrated in class. Your post-session assignment will be to ideate on a script for your unique assignment in Las Vegas.

SESSION FOUR: October 25 and 26, Las Vegas, Nevada

These two days will involve the actual content creation based on all you’ve learned during the last three sessions. On day one, you’ll go over the scripts and shooting plans for the day. Next, you’ll be off-site to begin shooting your video. At 4:00 PM, you’ll regroup in the classroom and debrief on the day. On day two, you’ll concentrate on editing the video in the morning as a rough cut and making final cuts and polishing the video in the afternoon.

Who Should Attend:

This is an intermediate-level workshop. While participants do not need to have experience in video production, a working knowledge of cameras and adult learning will be helpful.
