Authoring Tools 2021

See Which Authoring Tools and Features Users Value Most

In June of 2021, The Learning Guild conducted a survey among members of the L&D community to better understand what the market for eLearning authoring tools looks like today. Respondents were asked to share which tools they use, which features are most important, and what they hope to get out of their authoring tools in the future.

In Authoring Tools 2021, Jane Bozarth analyzes the 808 responses to share how the market for authoring tools has changed since 2013. This report includes information on which tools are used most frequently and how users feel about accessibility, ease of use, AR/VR, and other features that are growing in popularity.

Highlights from this study include:

  • A preference for easy-to-use tools over power has grown since 2017.
  • 74% of respondents rate user accessibly as being of either “high” or “very high” importance
  • Of the most important asynchronous authoring tools, Storyline 360 came out on top with Rise 360 taking a distant second.
  • Several respondents discussed the importance of a good asset library in light of an increased focus on DEI training and fewer people working in a traditional office setting.
