P15 Performance to Go: Cognitive Science, Mobile, and Performance Support

8:30 AM - 4:30 PM Tuesday, June 7

Technology gives you a powerful adjunct to your brain, and people are finding great value. The question is, what principles should you use for design? The answer, of course, is that these devices are cognitive prostheses—aids to your thinking—so you need to use what you know about how the brain works to truly complement it appropriately.

In this workshop, you’ll review the latest in cognitive science to provide robust frameworks for thinking about the design of mobile and performance support. From situated and distributed cognition, through attention and sensory capacities of vision and audition, to issues of time and space, you’ll review what’s known that has implications for design. You’ll tap into your experience in engaging with the world and technology to ground these principles, and derive implications for design that result in practical outcomes.

In this session, you will learn:

  • About cognitive architecture
  • About processing abilities and limits
  • About sensory capabilities and limitations
  • How technology complements thinking

Audience:
Intermediate and advanced designers, developers, project managers, and managers.

Technology discussed in this  session:
Sensors, input and output methods, and software.
