801 Not just Images - Applying Inclusive Design

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM Thursday, June 13

As designers, we understand the importance of inclusive content. But how do we apply inclusive design holistically? It requires empathy, understanding, and intentional inclusion of diverse aspects of humanity to break stereotypes, represent underrepresented groups, and redefine norms. While we have the guidance of the technical functionality of software or imagery, but beyond images, we must consider inclusivity in quizzes, scenarios, video scripts, text, and more.

Looking through different course elements (quizzes, scenarios, images, scripts), we will consider ways to increase inclusion, represent underrepresented people in all industries, roles, skills, and interests, and expand and redefine norms. Wrap it up by considering some missteps experienced in the initial rollout and application. You'll leave this session with new inclusive design considerations to apply back to your content, regardless of audience and modality.

Learning Objectives: In this session, you will

  • How inclusive design fits into your instructional design practice
  • Go beyond technical end-user experience and consider the emotional and social impact we create
  • Identify elements of content to apply inclusive design practices, including scenarios, quizzes, and written examples.
  • Considerations to increasing inclusion for visuals (icons and images) and expressions (word choice and language)
  • Avoid common missteps to increase intentional inclusion.
