Enhancing the Learning Experience Through Stories

September 26 & 27, 10 AM - 1:30 PM PT

Storytelling is an effective tool in supporting the learning experience. However, like any tool, it only works if you know how to use it. For example, stories can encourage empathy, but only if you know how to trigger empathy in your learners. Stories can connect people through emotion, but only if you know what emotions need to be engaged and how to trigger them through writing and imagery. People can recognize themselves in characters, but only if you build compelling characters that reflect learners’ experiences. Writing stories and using them as teaching tools are separate skills from instructional design—skills that must be deliberately learned and practiced. And when it’s done well, the results may create a meaningful and memorable experience for your learners.

In this workshop you’ll learn what makes stories impactful and how to use those stories as teaching tools in both instructor-led training and eLearning. You’ll begin by defining what makes a story compelling and what qualities your stories should have to hit the mark. Then, you’ll engage in exercises on finding inspiration for stories, whether that requires interviewing SMEs or mining your own experiences. Next, you’ll use a character-driven approach to developing stories, since we know that characters are often proxies for your learners. You’ll employ tools and templates to build a character and then build a story that describes the journey between where the character is now and where they want to be. Finally, you’ll practice writing those stories as scenarios for eLearning using a tool that walks you through the process.

In this workshop you will learn:

  • How to incorporate compelling elements in your stories so that they will connect with learners
  • How to find inspiration for your stories and how to use it to get started writing
  • How to build characters that resonate with learners
  • How to turn stories into scenarios to incorporate into your eLearning courses
