306 Five Survey Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them

2:30 PM - 3:30 PM Wednesday, April 20

Salon 18

Just as a construction team wouldn't start building without a blueprint, you shouldn't launch a survey without a methodology plan. The quality of your analysis depends on the quality of data you collect. But how do you collect the data you need? If, like many L&D professionals, you struggle to write effective surveys, this session will help. You will learn five pitfalls that often occur before a survey is launched, and take away strategies to help you successfully plan, design, and iterate your next survey.

In this session, you'll learn five steps to successfully planning your next survey. Whether you are collecting data for a needs assessment, course, program, learning event, or employee survey, this session will provide you with pitfall survival tips based on research-based best practices. You'll receive an overview of the basics of surveys and a practical worksheet that can be applied every time you are starting a new data collection project. This survey pitfall survival guide session will teach you how to clarify your survey purpose, design the optimal data collection methodology, write effective questions, test your survey usability, and plan a user-centered approach for the survey launch.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to clarify the purpose of your survey and align each question to the purpose of your study
  • The strengths, limitations, and delimitations of surveys, questionnaires, interviews, and focus groups, and how to choose the best methodology for your data collection needs
  • Strategies for writing and formatting effective questions so your results are relevant, valid, reliable, and trustworthy
  • Why and how to plan your survey based on the needs and interests of your learners
  • Tips for testing your survey for usability before launch
