811 BYOD: Build Game Elements Into Your Storyline Game, No Coding Required

Have you ever wondered how to incorporate game elements into your learning game without coding? While coding is helpful and sometimes needed to build complex games, it is entirely possible to make a perfectly functioning and engaging game using only Storyline variables and triggers.

In addition to building variables and triggers in this session, we will discuss how these elements work together in a real game. Most of the session will be spent learning how to set variables and triggers to one of the following game elements: an avatar, timer, a shopping cart that updates as you add or remove items, a progress bar, and a points calculator. As the session time is limited, we will vote on which element we take under the microscope. At the end of the session, you will get instructions for all the game elements. Since we are working with a fully functioning game, we will have the opportunity to discuss challenges during the development like graphic design, compromises in game design due to time constraints (aka how not to fall into the deep rabbit hole with the build), and share our experiences on how to get past them.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to set variables and triggers for an avatar, timer, a shopping cart that updates as you add or remove items, a progress bar, and a points calculator
  • How to weave variables across the game to drive the course of the game
  • Challenges in building a shopping cart
  • How to manage the situation when you realize that you could build the game for the next year to make it perfect, but you only have two months left to publish it
  • How to build simple assets with Google Autodraw
