308 The Power and Potential of Micro-sims

2:30 PM - 3:30 PM Wednesday, June 8

Development

211/212

The convergence of mobile delivery, micro-learning, and new authoring tools provides great opportunities to innovate where limited time and budget are available. Much mobile-delivered micro-learning focuses on spaced repetition and memorization. Micro-sims go beyond knowledge and comprehension and require learners to synthesize and apply concepts in realistic contexts.

In this session you will learn a practical challenge/choices/consequences micro-sims model that succinctly and powerfully provides opportunities for risk-free practice in contexts that are closer to the point of performance for learners. With (almost) ubiquitous Wi-Fi, micro-sims can incorporate video segments on mobile devices, further enhancing their impact. You will learn the theory and measured impact behind micro-sims, viewing real-world examples of micro-sims in different industry situations. You will learn just how easy it is to design and deliver this learning format on mobile devices.

In this session, you will learn:

  • The measurable benefits of the micro-simulation approach
  • The key design principles behind effective micro-sim creation
  • How to apply different authoring tool and delivery mechanisms to your own mobile production processes
  • When to use micro-sims as part of a broader program delivery

Audience:
Novice and intermediate designers, developers, project managers, managers, and directors.

Technology discussed in this session:
Tablets and smartphones that use HTML5. Different authoring platforms will be compared.
