407 Leveling Up Your Videos: Getting Better in a Scalable Way

10:45 AM - 11:45 AM Thursday, October 27

Jamaica AB

Video is ubiquitous in instructional content. It can be the main content,  a supplement to virtual or instructor-led sessions, or part of interactive learning modules. The space for videos has never been more clear. But just turning on and pointing the video camera really isn't enough. From TV to YouTube, we're surrounded by high-quality examples. It seems like everyone is making better-looking and better-sounding videos. You don't have to be left behind, and you don't need a huge budget. We'll look at a variety of ways you can level up your videos in a scalable, approachable way.

During this session we will define what 'good video' is and should be. Next, we'll look at the process and pieces needed for video creation. What strategies can be applied to improve each section? Rather than look at each one and just throw out a bunch of ideas, we'll be borrowing the approach from author James Clear's book, Atomic Habits, and approaching our video creation skills with a growth mindset of the 'aggregation of marginal gains.' We'll look at how some small changes can add up to huge improvements and quality outcomes in the areas of pre-production (e.g., scripting and objective setting), production (recording and creating materials), and post production (e.g., editing.) During the session you'll be presented with lessons learned from experienced video creators, several key best practices, and suggestions for avoiding pitfalls and making improvements. We'll also explore opportunities where having a budget, even a modest one, might help, and what to do if you don't have any. You'll leave the session with resources to help you put a plan of improvement into place.

In this session, you will learn:

  • Standard processes and workflows for effectively creating videos
  • Ways you can make small improvements to increase the quality and effectiveness of your videos
  • Recommended best practices as suggested by other video creators about quality and process improvements
  • About a variety of resources available that can help you on your video learning journey
