205 More Than a Game: Motivating Change Through Behavior-based Games

4:15 PM - 5:15 PM ET / 1:15 PM - 2:15 PM PT Wednesday, October 26

Martinique AB

Are you struggling to motivate your learners and considering adding game mechanics? Or are you using gamification in your training but you aren't getting the desired results from the courses? Sure, games are fun and you'd think that would be enough to engage learners, however, you must be careful. You can disengage learners if they cannot connect the purpose of the game to a desired outcome. The key to making the rewards, points, and other game mechanics effective is to use them to motivate and encourage specific behavior.

In this session you will up your game (your instructional design game, that is) by learning how to design effective, engaging, and relevant game mechanics that motivate learners to perform desired behaviors. First, you'll discover exactly what gamification is beyond the points and badges, and more importantly, what gamification is not. You'll learn when and when not to use gamification. Then you'll go through the gamification design process step-by-step, seeing lots of specific examples and scenarios. By the end of the session, you will be able to qualify business goals and learning objectives for gamification, and create behavioral-based games the get results and keep learners engaged.

In this session, you will learn:

  • What gamification is and what it is not
  • Why gamification isn't always the best training solution
  • The best situations to use game mechanics in training
  • How to tie game mechanics to a business goal and learning objectives
  • The methodology for designing game mechanics that motivates desired behaviors
