P20 BYOD: Build Your First VR Experience with Unreal Engine
8:30 AM - 4:30 PM Tuesday, October 22
Trinidad A
Developing virtual reality (VR) apps doesn't have to be scary— Unreal Engine makes it easy with pre-built templates. Similar to Unity, Unreal Engine offers a unique user interface that allows individuals of disparate technical acumen the ability to create their own VR worlds.
In this hands-on workshop, we will demystify this robust and popular gaming engine to create and develop together a simple VR experience. We will work step-by-step to unbox Unreal Engine's templates to develop and publish a functional VR experience, which we can then run initial tests and see what they're doing inside the Unreal development area. Additional testing can be done with VR viewers (Oculus Go; etc. Although not required, participants are encouraged to bring their own VR viewers as headsets will be limited). You will learn more about the value of Unreal’s community resources and knowledge base, and how to leverage these as you advance your understanding and use of VR for learning solutions.
In this session, you will learn:
- How to work within the Unreal Engine interface, IDE
- Basic components of a VR world
- How to use pre-built templates to develop VR
- How to publish your VR app for testing
- How to leverage Unreal's extensive community and knowledge base
- Elements to consider when creating your next VR app
Audience:
Designers, developers
Technology discussed:
VR, Unreal Engine, VR viewers, 3-D models, shaders, maps, transforms, various publishing options/platforms, HTML5/JavaScript /CSS3/WebGL
Technology requirements:
Participants should have a laptop with Unreal Engine already installed. Participants will need to create or use an existing Unreal account - see https://www.unrealengine.com for more details. The Unreal Engine works best with the use of a computing mouse. Participants can also bring VR viewers (Oculus Go, Google Daydream, etc.) to test their VR apps.
