Including games within eLearning courses is popular with course designers and learners. But unlike games played for fun, instructional games should have a specific purpose. They must advance the learning in some way. This requires designing the game with this in mind. It is not enough to consider just game play rules, layout, and objects—you must also consider question types, feedback actions, order of play, location in the course, and more.

Participants in this session will explore the pros and cons of including games within your courses. You will review the various considerations necessary to create an effective instructional game, examine several game examples and a checklist of considerations used for each, and discuss how to flowchart and organize your games. You’ll learn what may make for appropriate and less-appropriate game placement within the course.
