Many organizations are still using countless paper-based guides, manuals, and job aids for day-to-day operations. The reliability of such can often be questionable, as older documents may not all be thrown out when replaced with an updated version. Though some organizations have gone paperless, the electronic versions of the documents are still basic text—not making use of the full potential of this format. 

This session will provide the information needed to create your own interactive eBooks for use on various OSs. The session will address formatting the document for multiple devices, types of media that can be integrated into the document (such as images, video, audio, and other interactive elements), and various free and paid tools that can be used in the process. In addition to covering various resources, you will walk through a basic workflow to convert a simple document with a few basic media types to an ePub file (and make that file available to participants in Dropbox). Participants will leave with the basic skills needed for immediate practical application—they can begin converting their own job aids, manuals, etc.—to ePubs and/or add interactivity as appropriate.

  • How to convert your print documents to eBooks
  • Ways to integrate multimedia elements into your eBooks
  • How to format your eBook content for multiple devices
  • Methods to deploy eBooks to devices

Novice and intermediate designers, developers, project managers, and managers. Participants will benefit most if they have a basic understanding of creating and editing documents in MS Word. 

Technology discussed in this session:
Multiple devices (iPad, iPhone, Nook,); various platforms, including MS Word, Calibre, Sigil, Adobe Acrobat, and iBooks Author (with video, audio, and HTML5). 

Student technology needs:
A mobile device (tablet, smartphone, laptop) with an eReader.
