Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children uses hoists and slings to lift children from beds, cars, bathtubs, etc. Classroom training in using hoists gave nurses hands-on experience to operate the hoist safely and to maximize the comfort for the children riding in the sling. However, they needed to give nurses the chance to practice any time without worrying about a child, as well as a need to give children a chance to become familiar with hoists, thereby reducing their trepidation before they arrive at the hospital. 

Participants in this case-study session will learn about a web-based simulation that uses interactive 3-D models of the hoist and 3-D human avatars to enable operators to practice hoist operation in realistic scenarios. This provides the nurses with opportunities for “safe” failure and reflection and permits further practice outside of the classroom in a safe environment. The hospital also repurposed some of the “fun” parts of the course for children to play with. You will learn which tools they used to build the 3-D course, the budgetary constraints, the iterative development process, and ways to blend gamification and traditional learning.
