Transmedia storytelling tells a single story or story experience across multiple platforms and formats using digital technologies. These platforms include film, online video, alternate reality games, social media tools, and mobile technologies. While the antecedents of transmedia storytelling stretch back several decades, with the rise of social and mobile technologies it has emerged as a powerful way to engage audiences in a story. Transmedia storytelling is often touted as the future of TV, film, marketing, and now, perhaps, learning. Transmedia storytelling offers many lessons for learning professionals on how to effectively employ technologies to engage audiences and help them learn.
Participants in this session will explore transmedia storytelling with specific examples from the worlds of television, film, and advertising. You’ll discover parallels from these examples to the world of learning. Examples from film and advertising include the Star Wars franchise and the 2012 Ford Fusion advertising campaign. You’ll also review traditional storytelling, transmedia storytelling, and participatory storytelling and learn the differences and similarities between the three.
