World language acquisition depends upon reading, writing, speaking/listening, and practice. Most foreign language courses (traditional and online) respond to some but not all of these aspects. One of the most common student and teacher complaints: not enough speaking (or time to have meaningful speaking).
Discover how BYU Independent Study has developed a world language course model which provides a virtual lounge where students practice for oral exams, chat with each other, and receive feedback from an instructor/fluent-level speaker; writing assignments in every lesson; one-on-one speaking assessments with the instructor/TA; live instructor broadcasts; and access to an online lab with unlimited interactive drills/activities. Additionally, the program’s high school Chinese course is now mobile-ready, with free apps that allow further practice and drills from a mobile device.
In this session, you will learn:
- How to engage students through simple mobile apps
- About an app-based LMS
- How to create genuine language learning experiences (online/mobile-ready)
- About overcoming resistance to change
Audience:
Those needing to learn about teaching languages using mobile.
Technology discussed in this session:
Adobe Connect, Agilix BrainHoney, MyChineseLab (Pearson application), Chinese Link (Pearson text), and Cloud9.
